What equipment do you use?
I’m often asked what photographic equipment I use. A good photograph is based on a good idea, creativity and a good technical understanding, equipment is always secondary. Having said this, a camera bag filled with great cameras and lenses can help! The golden rule for me is to use prime, (fixed focal length), lenses whenever possible. Prime lenses are not the standard zoom type of lens but are better quality due to the quality of the glass, there are also less groups of glass elements within the lens which ultimately means they produce sharper images. I also often take an old film camera along with me to weddings as well as my regular digital kit, there are some style of shots that digital cameras just cannot quite capture, (yet!)
My camera bag includes;
Canon 5D MkII
Canon 5D Mk I (Spare)
Canon 16-35mm F2.8L
Canon 85mm F1.2L
Canon 50mm F1.4
Sigma 105mm Macro F2.8
Sigma 15mm Fisheye F2.8
Canon 70-200mm IS F2.8L
Canon 580EX II Flashgun
2x Bowens 500DX Mono blocs
2x Bowens 750 Plus Mono blocs

Kirsty & Matt (Pembroke Lodge, London)
Kirsty and Matt got married at the lovely Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park. The morning was spent at the salon which made for some fun images! Blazing sun came through the windows for the ceremony at the lodge providing wonderful light, there were lots of colours for my camera to capture, it was a day of purples, oranges and yellows, the sunset was also one of the best I’ve seen. Kirsty looked fantastic, they were both very natural in front of the camera – I think they may have done some modeling:) It was another fine and memorable wedding.

Leanne & James (Seal, Kent)
Leanne and Jame’s wedding was set in Kent, near the town of Seal. We got great images from the grand staircase inside the house. As always I had a my strobe lighting system with me so even though the lighting inside was quite dark for cameras the strobes helped make everything look great! I went with Leanne and James in their white Morris Cowley wedding car to take photographs away from the venue, my father owns a 1934 Austin 7 which is similar so I had a lot of interest in their wedding car!

There is lots of advice about studio set ups or location set ups, it’s mainly tailored for photographers using speedlites. The web site has features on photo shoots including what to do in specific lighting scenarios, there are more than 1,000 articles about lighting and in-depth interviews with some great photographers.

Wedding venue – 116 Pall Mall, IOD (London)
116 Pall Mall, also known as The Institute of Directors, (IOD), is a venue I have photographed a few weddings at. It is a brilliant place to hold a wedding, a blend of splendor and history welcomes you as you make your way up the breath-taking staircase. It was built in the 17th century and is a grade 1 listed building. Wedding ceremonies can actually be held on the huge staircase! There is a marble bust of Lord Nelson which is said to be the only bust of Nelson created from life and stands on a plinth made from part of HMS Victory! Massive paintings of Nelson’s famous battle at Trafalgar adorn the walls, it really is a sight to behold. The service also runs like clockwork, the in-house wedding planner there is one of the best I have worked with, her attention to detail is phenomenal!
